Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our GMAT tutoring services

I have used another GMAT tutor or taken another GMAT prep course but haven't achieved the score I need. Can you help?

expand_more

Yes. Many of our students come to us after trying other prep options. In nearly all cases, they surpass their previous limits and achieve the scores they need.

The difference between our GMAT tutoring and others lies in our teaching style and materials. Some prep companies teach strategies like picking likely answers or quick estimation techniques. These techniques are limiting because, while they may work on easier questions, the GMAT is deliberately designed to render these strategies ineffective at higher levels. If you want a top score, there is no substitute for mastering the material.

We teach our students to fully solve and understand each concept in a mathematically sound way. You'll get the score you need because there is no guesswork involved. By the time you take the test, you will have seen every concept and know exactly how to handle it. We will teach you everything you need to know and provide as many practice problems as you can manage. When you walk into the test, you'll be confident you can achieve the score you need.

How long should I prepare for the GMAT?

expand_more

The answer depends on several factors, such as:

  • What score are you targeting?
  • Have you done any GMAT prep?
  • How often do you plan to schedule sessions?
  • How many hours a week can you allocate to studying?

Someone who has spent months studying and only needs fine-tuning will need to spend less time than someone who is just starting and hasn't touched math since high school.

When you take a trial class with us, we can gauge your GMAT skills. From there, we can provide an approximate timeline and create a study plan.

Do you provide GMAT materials?

expand_more

Yes, we provide all necessary materials. As one of our students, you'll gain access to our extensive online database, which includes thousands of real GMAT questions and answers. We supply all the problems for our sessions and offer plenty of homework questions to reinforce learning. Our question bank is one of the best available, with thousands of questions organized by difficulty level and type.

Is your GMAT tutoring online or in-person?

expand_more

Post-COVID, over most schedule sessions online. Many students prefer this option because it eliminates commuting and makes scheduling easier. However, we also have an office near Herald Square, and in-person sessions are available for those who prefer to meet face-to-face.

How long are your GMAT tutoring sessions?

expand_more

All tutoring sessions are 2 hours long. We require this because, frankly, 1 hour is not enough to cover the depth and breadth of the GMAT material. Around the 1-hour mark is when you will be deeply immersed in the material and getting the most out of our lessons. The 2-hour structure also helps build your endurance, which you will need for the actual GMAT exam.

I am really bad at math. Do you help students of all levels?

expand_more

Regardless of your current math skills, we're here to help. We specialize in the GMAT quant section and cover all the necessary math concepts in detail. If it's been a while since you've studied math, it might take a bit longer, but we'll guide you through every step. We explain each concept clearly and provide plenty of practice to ensure you're fully prepared. Don't be nervous—we've helped many students overcome their math challenges, and you'll become an expert in no time.

Can you provide more details on what we will do in our GMAT tutoring sessions?

expand_more

In each session, we will work through a series of problem sets together. These problem sets are specially curated to target particular areas of the GMAT. As we go through these problems, we will teach you our techniques and strategies.

We will not waste your time working on areas you show strength in. If you already show subject mastery on a particular topic, we will move on to one that needs improvement. We structure our sessions in this way because we find our students learn best by doing. You are more likely to remember a technique or strategy when you apply it.

We constantly note which problems and areas challenge you to revisit periodically. We also assign plenty of homework, which is essential to mastering what we go through.

We have problem sets for every GMAT section, question type, and question level. The GMAT does not weigh all sections equally, so we start with the ones that offer the most score improvement potential and move on to less-weighted topics afterward.

The key to succeeding on the GMAT is material mastery. Tricks and shortcuts only work to a certain question level. If you want to score in the top percentiles, these will cease working. There is no substitute for mastering the material if you want a top score. We will teach you all the math and provide plenty of practice for all questions. Our goal is to help you get your target score as quickly as possible.

Do you only tutor New York students?

expand_more

Our physical office is in New York City near Herald Square, but we provide GMAT tutoring to students across the U.S. and internationally. Most of our sessions are now virtual, even for students who live nearby, due to the convenience. So, no matter where you're located, don't hesitate to reach out.

Do you offer GMAT Focus tutoring?

expand_more

Yes. Initially, the GMAT Focus was a new test that has since replaced the original GMAT.

Do you offer Executive Assessment tutoring?

expand_more

Yes. We offer Executive Assessment (EA) tutoring. While the curriculum relies heavily on our GMAT materials, we modify them for the particular sections of the EA.

Do you offer GRE tutoring?

expand_more

Yes. Historically, our tutoring solely focused on the GMAT. As graduate schools began weighing the GRE more heavily, and based on student demand, we started offering GRE tutoring. Both the GRE and GMAT exams cover the same material, albeit in slightly different formats. The prep we offer is very similar. We only modify some of the materials and focus more heavily on some sections. Our GRE students have also had similarly successful track records to our GMAT students. You can learn more about our GRE prep at our dedicated sister site: greinstructor.com.
